Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Kannywood, the Hausa-language film industry, has grown significantly in recent years and has become one of the most influential forms of entertainment in Northern Nigeria. It is a powerful medium for conveying social values, norms, and expectations, particularly concerning gender roles. In Gombe Local Government Area, the youth population is highly engaged with Kannywood films, which often portray traditional gender roles and societal expectations. These films feature prominent characters whose actions and relationships reflect the broader cultural attitudes towards masculinity and femininity. In many Kannywood films, gender roles are depicted in conventional ways, with men portrayed as dominant figures and women as nurturing and subordinate (Garba, 2023). However, recent shifts in Kannywood film content have started to challenge these traditional portrayals, presenting more complex and diverse representations of gender roles. This study will explore how Kannywood films influence the perceptions of gender roles among youths in Gombe, examining whether these films reinforce or challenge traditional gender norms and how they shape the views of young viewers.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The portrayal of gender roles in Kannywood films has often been a subject of critique, with some arguing that the films perpetuate stereotypes that limit the roles of women and men within society. In Gombe, the impact of Kannywood films on youth perceptions of gender roles remains underexplored. There is a need to understand how these films influence the way young people view their own roles and the roles of others in society. While some argue that Kannywood films reinforce patriarchal norms, others suggest that these films offer a platform for discussing and challenging gender expectations. The problem lies in determining how Kannywood films specifically shape the gender perspectives of youths in Gombe and whether these films contribute to the reinforcement of traditional gender norms or if they serve as a catalyst for change. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the influence of Kannywood films on youths' perceptions of gender roles and exploring the extent to which these films reflect or challenge societal expectations of men and women.

By understanding how these films influence youths’ perceptions of gender roles, the study will offer critical information for filmmakers, educators, and policymakers interested in using media as a tool for promoting gender equality. The findings will also contribute to the broader discourse on the role of entertainment media in challenging or reinforcing societal norms, particularly in the context of Northern Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on youths in Gombe Local Government Area and will explore their perceptions of gender roles in relation to Kannywood films.
